The Irish Defence Forces has a long professional history serving with the United Nations in areas of conflict. Ireland joined the United Nations in 1955 and the Irish Defence Forces have had an on going relationship with UN peace keeping missions since 1958. Irish Soldiers have served around the world with the United Nations and have proven to be not only exemplary soldiers but have a unique capacity to understand conflict and its impact on communities. Unfortunately, due to the very nature of their job, the Irish Soldier puts themselves in considerable risk and this has often resulted in loss of life. 

The 5th Battalion had lost Seven members of its personnel on active service up to the date of its stand down. These soldiers were incredible people that scarified time away from their families in an effort to better a country or region embroiled in conflict. Sadly, these soldier's, part of our family, paid the ultimate price. 

Every year, the 5th Battalion Association pays tribute to these soldier's and their families at the 5th Battalion Deceased Members mass which normally held on the first Saturday in November each year.  This mass allows us remember and pay respect to:
